Before You Begin Learning to Drive
Before beginning your practical driving lessons you must be in possession of a valid, signed provisional driving license.
You can obtain a provisional driving licence application by visiting your local post office or by using the DSA online application. You can apply for your provisional license up to three months before your seventeenth birthday however, it would not become valid until you were seventeen. Although you can begin your driving lessons as soon as your provisional driving licence becomes valid, you cannot book your Practical Driving Test until you have passed the Driving Theory Test.
You should be able to book your Driving Theory Test with a few days notice and receive your test results on the day of your test. You can book your Driving Theory Test to take place on or shortly after your seventeenth birthday provided you have a provisional driving licence. You can book your Driving Theory Test by using the DSA online application.
Provided you have a valid provisional driving licence you can start your practical driving lessons before you take your theory test. Thus, combining your theory study with the early part of your driving course. This gives you the added advantage of putting theory into practice out on the road. The waiting time for a Practical Driving Test is usually 6 -10 weeks. Sooner dates are usually available through test appointment cancellations. Once you had passed your Driving Theory Test you can book your Practical Driving Test using the DSA online application.
